Treatment

Treatment helps students to understand their condition and provides them with the opportunity to influence their own recovery The pillars of this process are exposure and response prevention; therapeutic approaches that help the student recognise the signs of compulsion and discover more constructive ways of combating their problems. Ultimately, students will become their own therapists, accepting responsibility for the management of their compulsion.

Treatment Plan

A treatment plan is formulated in collaboration with the student and is tailored to suit the individual’s background and specific problems. It includes a description of the disorder, the aims of the treatment, and the training phases to be completed, both at the OCD Centre and in their own home. Apart from addressing the problem of compulsion itself, the plan may also include social training and ADL and can be revised as necessary. All treatment plans encourage students to transition from intensive staff support to intensive self-support, which requires that students rely on the skills they have learned rather than on direct support from the staff.

Our aim is that students at the OCD Centre maintain and even increase their independence. Students are expected to take responsibility for cleaning and washing, for example. The degree of support the student will require is incorporated into the treatment plan. In addition, we arrange social activities that encourage students to practice their new skills in a variety of environments and settings.

Re-integration

The transition from care at the OCD Centre to life at home is included within the framework of the treatment plan in the form of a re-integration phase. The student plans this phase together with their contact person and support network and preferably in collaboration with a representative from their local health authority, also. The involvement of such a representative is highly recommended and is especially important in cases where help will be required in the home environment. The length and form of the re-integration phase is designed to meet the specific needs of each student. This phase is only complete when students successfully demonstrate the compulsion-management techniques learned at the OCD Centre in their home environment, proving that they can handle everyday life. This phase also provides information useful for refining management strategies.

Follow-up

One-year after treatment, we perform a follow-up evaluation to assess whether any additional measures are needed to ensure success.
